Final Day: A Fantastic Finish to Summer Project 2026
What a wonderful way to bring another incredible St Pius Summer Project to a close!
Our final day began with our annual visit from the always entertaining Niall de Búrca, whose storytelling had everyone completely captivated. Through his energy, humour and imagination, he brought stories to life and had both Juniors and Seniors laughing and engaged from start to finish. It was the perfect way to begin our final day.
With the sun shining, the celebrations continued outdoors with a series of fun-filled team games. The children threw themselves into the action, competing in sponge water races, bouncy castle races, basketball, Demolition and hula hoop challenges, creating plenty of laughter, excitement and friendly competition along the way. It was wonderful to see everyone encouraging their teammates and making the most of the beautiful summer weather.
Of course, no Summer Project finale would be complete without a special treat, and the arrival of the ice cream van was met with huge excitement!
As we bring this year's Summer Project to an end, we can look back on two truly amazing weeks filled with sports, games, trips, arts and crafts, drama, storytelling, music, laughter and unforgettable memories.
A very special word of thanks must go to the Summer Project Committee, led by Aoife McGrath. While the project itself lasts just two weeks, an enormous amount of work goes on behind the scenes throughout the year to make it all possible. From planning activities and organising volunteers to coordinating logistics and ensuring everything runs smoothly, the committee's dedication, commitment and hard work are the foundation of this amazing project that our kids look forward to every summer.
We would also like to thank all our coaches especially Rachael who stepped in this year as Sports lead and did an amazing job. Also our helpers, volunteers, and supervisors who contributed their time and to make the project such a success.
We would also like to pay special tribute to Maura, who is stepping down from the Summer Project Committee this year. As Treasurer since 2021, Maura is a practical, no-nonsense problem solver who keeps everything running behind the scenes. She takes care of the essential details that make very project a success, from managing finances and insurance to handing paperwork that keeps everything on track. Calm, dependable and full of sound advice, Maura has a knack for navigating challenges and finding practical solutions ensuring every project runs smoothly from start to finish. A regular quote from Maura “I’ll just do it myself, it’ll be quicker” . She has been a valued member of the committee and her contribution has been greatly appreciated by everyone involved. On behalf of the committee, parents and all the kids, we would like to sincerely thank you Maura for all you have done for the Summer Project. Your kindness, friendship and big heart will be greatly missed. ☹
Finally and most importantly, thank you to all our fantastic kids and teen helpers for bringing so much fun, positivity and energy every day. You are what makes the St Pius Summer Project so special. It’s a wonderful example of what can be achieved when a community comes together, and we are already looking forward to doing it all again in 2027!

Day 9: A very busy penultimate day!
Even though Summer Project 2026 is drawing to a close, we definitely were not winding down - today was one of the busiest days so far!
The Juniors started the day with African Drumming and Party Games. The kids played some old-school classics such as musical statutes, balloon racing and pass-the-parcel. Giddy Studios was as successful as ever, with 3 different pottery pieces to choose from to paint and glaze. They definitely earned their pizza!
The Seniors were also on-the-go all day. We had our 3rd Golf Session in Spawell. There was also horse-riding up in Sandyford, what a beautiful day for a canter around the paddocks! We had our first ever outing to Zipit in Tibradden Woods, the high ziplines and obstacles courses were not for the faint-hearted. For the gamers among us, there was a trip to Zero Latency - the kids played Xbox and Nintendo Switch, and this was just while waiting to enter the VR room! Back at HQ, there were 2 African Drumming sessions which were a huge hit, apparently there was even a spot of dancing! There really was something for everyone today.
Of course, the main event was our Olympic Handball final! All teams played two matches - with an extra round played while the semi-finals took place. Our big final took place on our main pitch - between Team 8 and Team 14. It was an absolute cracker with the two teams evenly matched, it was impossible to predict who would win. In the end Team 8 just scraped by, winning 9 - 8. Congrats to all our teams who played such sporting and exciting games throughout the tournament!

Day 8: A Scorching Day of Fun at Clara Lara
Our annual trip to Clara Lara is always one of the highlights of the Summer Project, and this year’s visit was another fantastic day out. With the sun shining from start to finish, it was an absolute scorcher of a day, and excitement was high as two busloads of St Pius kids set off for a fun-filled day of adventure!
The children had a wonderful time making the most of everything Clara Lara has to offer. From the water slides, lakes, swing ropes and obstacle challenges to the ever-popular go-karting, there was plenty of fun, laughter and excitement throughout the day. The beautiful weather made the water activities even more enjoyable, while chips and ice cream were in constant demand as everyone tried to keep cool in the heat!
A special mention must go to Gillian French, whose homemade flapjacks went down an absolute treat. They were such a hit that she has already volunteered for flapjack duty again next year!
After a busy day packed with activity, sunshine and adventure, the buses returned home with lots of very tired kids – a sure sign of a day well spent. Clara Lara continues to be one of those annual away days that everyone looks forward to, and once again it proved to be a truly memorable and enjoyable day for us all.

Day 7: Our annual trip to the Cinema
Our Juniors had a long lie-in this morning, but not so for our Seniors - who had Golf Session 2 over in Spawell, and also a trip to the roller-skating rink on the Long Mile Road.
However, the main event was our annual trip to the cinema, both Juniors and Seniors headed off on the bus to Tallaght. Once armed with popcorn, jellies and drink, it was all in to see Toy Story 5. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the movie.
We did get to spend time in the evening sun at our penultimate round of Olympic Handball. Another 3 action-packed and competitive games, which sets us well up for the final on Thursday!
Tomorrow looks like it's going to be a scorcher for the best day of Summer Project - the trip to Clara Lara! Slap on the sun-cream and shades - we'll see ye there!

Day 6: A great action packed start to week 2
Juniors ( Gymnastics, Tennis and Storytelling & Recycled Art)
Week Two got off to a fantastic start with a fun-filled Gymnastics session led by our fabulous teacher, Rachael, with brilliant support from our teen volunteers. There were tumbles, cartwheels and hula hoops spinning throughout the morning, and it was lovely to see the children building new friendships and getting to know the teen helpers along the way.
Our Junior Tennis session in the school was led by Coach Philip from Templeogue Tennis Club, who introduced our juniors to key tennis skills through some fun and engaging activities.
This afternoon’s storytelling and recycled art group started with an interactive story about a selfish giant, fun loving children and some clever and crafty recycling ideas. Then they were treated to a fabulous time with art teacher Caroline who led a beautiful session using recycled materials to create pieces that tied in with our story. What a fun and inspiring afternoon!
Seniors (Golf, Art, Drama, Cake Decorating, Soccer World Cup and Disco)
Our Senior Golf was a great success, with Brendan and Mark the pros leading the session and putting participants through their paces. From improving putting skills to enjoying some friendly competition, everyone had a fantastic morning at the Spawell.
This morning’s drama group explored the famous mime box technique before putting their new skills into action by creating imaginative mime scenes featuring magical potions. We also met the “worst person for the job,” leading to some hilarious—and occasionally disastrous!—situations, before finishing with improvised scenes inspired by a classic Allan Ahlberg poem. A morning full of creativity!
Creativity didn’t stop then and was on full display at our Cake Decorating in the afternoon, where our Seniors made fantastic Toy Story-themed cupcakes and top hats, as well as decorating their own cake boxes to take home. A huge thank you to our two amazing cake decorating queens, Liz and Lauren, whose help and creative skills made the session such a sweet success!
Workshop facilitator Caoilfhionn supplied our seniors with a range of Art materials and surfaces to create their own mixed-media artworks, with the theme of Summer being in mind. The sessions began with timed and prompted challenges, and the children drew, painted, stamped and collaged from coloured paper and National Geographic clippings. Caoilfhionn encouraged the seniors to try new techniques like ‘sgraffito’ and ‘monotype’ etching into sponge and painting transfer, as well as using colours they don’t usually like and drawing with their eyes closed as well as with their non-dominant hand.
The Soccer World Cup delivered plenty of excitement, with Spain overcoming Portugal in a dramatic penalty shoot-out and Brazil securing a last-minute victory against Nigeria to reach the final. The tournament concluded with a dominant display from Brazil, who defeated Spain 5–0 to be crowned Soccer World Cup champions. Well done to all the teams in a very enjoyable afternoon of soccer in the Spawell.
The PE Hall was buzzing this evening with energy as our seniors danced away at the annual Monday evening Summer Project Disco. With great music from our DJ, plenty of laughs, treats from the tuck shop and lots of dancing!! The best picture of the evening goes to the boys fixing their hair looking in the car window!!! 😊 As another fun-filled day comes to a close, it's off to bed for everyone to rest up and recharge in preparation for another exciting day tomorrow, with roller skating, golf, a trip to the cinema and round 3 of Olympic Handball all to look forward to!

Day 5: Week one done!
The sun was shining for the last day of Week 1 Summer Project 2026. Forty-three Juniors headed off on the bus to Clonfert Pet Farm. There were squirrels, monkeys, donkeys and even an ostrich waiting to greet the kids. Great fun was also had on the zipline and in the playground. There were a few sleepy-heads on the bus home - and that was just our teen volunteers!
The Seniors made the inaugural trip to Aquazone out in Blanchardstown. By all accounts it was a major highlight of this year's Summer Project, with slides, lazy rivers and wave pools to enjoy. This will definitely become an annual outing!

Day 4: Forest Trail and a Tarantula Encounter
Art – Juniors
The junior art class with Caoilfhionn was full of fun and creativity, with the children enjoying painting, stencils, alphabet-inspired artwork, and a variety of colourful summer-themed projects.
Jungle Dave and Animal Art – Juniors
Our ever popular session with Jungle Dave was packed with adventure as the children met and even held a tarantula, a frog, a snake, and the ever-popular snapping turtle! There were plenty of squeals, smiles, and fascinating facts throughout the visit—and to top it all off, everyone watched Dave eat a cricket… yummy!
Forest Trail in Djouce Woods – Seniors
Our Seniors had a slight change of plan today and headed to the Djouce Forest Trail instead of the Sugarloaf. Will we ever make it back to the Sugarloaf? It's been a while!!!
After a good uphill trek, and a surprise encounter with some deer who seemed determined to block their path, the group reached the top where they enjoyed a sunny picnic and took in the beautiful surroundings. Thankfully, the journey back involved a much easier downhill route to the bus.
Quiz – Seniors
Our senior quizzers had an absolutely brilliant afternoon at today’s Summer Project Quiz. The competition was lively from start to finish, with The “Cool” Cucumbers claiming the top spot, closely followed by the ever‑impressive The “Pius” Pickles.
The room was buzzing with singing, joke‑telling, riddles, and dancing. From general knowledge and sports to a special St. Pius round, the teams showed teamwork and serious brainpower. A huge thank you to our fantastic teen volunteers — Doireann, Olivia, Emily, and Georgia — who set the questions, marked the rounds, and kept everything running smoothly. Summer Project kids go on to great things — and today proved it.
Olympic Handball – Round 2
Everyone came together at the school for Round 2 of our Olympic Handball tournament. Three rounds of matches were played, bringing plenty of excitement, friendly competition, and great fun for all involved.
We're hoping everyone is tucked up in bed now—including the parents!—ready for the final day of what has been a fantastic and busy week. Tomorrow, our Juniors and 2nd Class will enjoy a trip to Clonfert Pet Farm, while our Seniors head off for an exciting day at Aquazone. We can't wait for another memorable day of adventure and fun!

Day 3: First Trips away
Wednesday was another action-packed day for all. Our Juniors took off to Tymon Park for our second Forest School session, where there was lots of song-singing, dancing and creating. Picture Bingo in the hall was the perfect activity to follow that busy morning.
It was a day off-site for our Seniors. Explorium was the destination for 2nd, 3rd and 4th classers, who had a great day conducting experiments, watching the light show and taking on the Gravity Room.
Our 5th and 6th classers headed off on the bus for Dundrum. It was bowling and darts in Lane 7 and a round of golf in Rainforest Adventure. Of course, there was the obligatory trip to McDonalds for lunch.
The weather (for once!) looks great for those climbing the Sugar Loaf tomorrow, and there are exciting activities closer to home too: Jungle Dave and the Senior Quiz to name but a few. And looking forward to seeing everyone for Round 2 of Olympic Handball!

Day 2: An action-packed day for both Juniors & Seniors!
Kaizen Dojo – Juniors & Seniors
Both groups enjoyed an exciting session at Kaizen Dojo Terenure. A huge thank you to Nicole for the warm welcome and for introducing the children to the principles of Karate, along with the importance of exercise and warming up properly. There was lots of energy, great concentration and plenty of smiles throughout the session. Everyone left with tired legs and happy faces!
Drama – Juniors & Seniors
The drama groups had a great time today, bringing plenty of imagination, laughter, and creativity to life. Their performances featured everything from peacocks and escaped tarantulas to even the much-loved Zig and Zag puppets! They also gave us an exciting sneak peek at the upcoming summer blockbusters, complete with exploding toilets and villainous French fries.
Yard Games – Juniors
The fun continued in the school yard with an hour of energetic games, including hurdles, ball challenges and a lively round of Ship, Sea, Shore, which became a little competitive at times!
The showers certainly didn’t dampen the Juniors’ spirits, and a great time was had by all. After a busy afternoon packed with fun and laughter, everyone headed home tired but happy, ready for a well-earned rest!
Soccer – Juniors
The real world cup was held this morning for the juniors! The teams were Brazil, Argentina, France and Spain. Spain and Brazil battled it out in the cup final with Spain narrowly defeating Brazil 3-2. Also, a very close shield cup final between France and Argentina! After our formal prize giving ceremony, it was time for fun games. We chased balloons and sat on them to pop them, finding out what treat was inside! We searched for mini footballs with our names on them, and if you found the right one you got to keep it. Big shout out to a great junior gang who gave it their all!
Forest School (2nd & 3rd Class)
2nd and 3rd Class had a great time in Forest School. We started by singing a lovely song about a tree, everyone joined in! We used magical trail dust so our friends could find us in the trees and made beautiful wooden pendants to wear. We played a really fun game of “Fire” at the end. We had so much fun. Thank you to Róisín and Finola our wonderful forest school teachers.
Swimming – Seniors
The Senior Swimming group had a fantastic hour in Templeogue Swimming Pool. There was plenty of splashing, laughter and fun as everyone enjoyed cooling off in the water.
Tennis – Seniors
Senior tennis got off with great enthusiasm despite the weather. Four seasons on 3 courts, with volleys, serves and lots of laughter in between. The children and coach Julian persevered, which paid off with sunshine in between sets!! A great start in preparation for Wimbledon this week on TV.
Tag Rugby
The rain certainly didn’t dampen spirits at Tag Rugby this evening, providing a thrilling finale to the day. Teams competed in a round-robin tournament before battling it out in the finals, with excellent teamwork, passing and tagging on display throughout.
Japan emerged as champions, taking the title on try difference after a closely contested competition.
Congratulations to Team Japan: Daragh Ward, Lili Mc Ginley, Joe Maguire, Jack O’Leary, Kate Galligan, Cillian Ward, Maebh Corcoran, Tom O’Leary and Perrie Cannon.
Commiserations to Wales, who pushed the winners all the way in a fiercely fought final and were unlucky to miss out on the title. Well done to all teams for their enthusiasm, sportsmanship and great effort.

Both groups enjoyed an exciting session at Kaizen Dojo Terenure. A huge thank you to Nicole for the warm welcome and for introducing the children to the principles of Karate, along with the importance of exercise and warming up properly. There was lots of energy, great concentration and plenty of smiles throughout the session. Everyone left with tired legs and happy faces!
Drama – Juniors & Seniors
The drama groups had a great time today, bringing plenty of imagination, laughter, and creativity to life. Their performances featured everything from peacocks and escaped tarantulas to even the much-loved Zig and Zag puppets! They also gave us an exciting sneak peek at the upcoming summer blockbusters, complete with exploding toilets and villainous French fries.
Yard Games – Juniors
The fun continued in the school yard with an hour of energetic games, including hurdles, ball challenges and a lively round of Ship, Sea, Shore, which became a little competitive at times!
The showers certainly didn’t dampen the Juniors’ spirits, and a great time was had by all. After a busy afternoon packed with fun and laughter, everyone headed home tired but happy, ready for a well-earned rest!

Day 1: And we're off!
Summer Project 2026 got off to a flying start this morning. The Juniors tested their general knowledge at the quiz in the hall, while the Seniors took over Bushy Park for an epic Rounders tournament. In the afternoon, it was the Juniors who headed to Bushy for playground fun and some relaxing yoga. It was not as relaxing out in the Dublin Climbing Centre for the Seniors who braved the high walls without a bother.
We all came together in the school for the first round of Olympic Handball, the teams are all getting to know each other and there were some very exciting games. Bed early tonight and another fun day tomorrow! Click here for a snapshot of today's fun.
